On April 4, 2017, the Space Science and Geospatial Institute, in collaboration with the Russian Embassy, ​​celebrated the anniversary of the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin, who became the first person to travel into space aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.

Speaking at the event, Abdisa Yilma, Director General of the Space Science and Geospatial Institute, said that Yuri Gagari made a significant contribution to space science by turning theory into practice during the Cold War.

Although the forms of international relations have changed, just like technology, he said, space exploration is a symbol of power and prestige, and the work begun in cooperation with the Russian government will continue to strengthen.

The Ambassador of the Russian Embassy in Ethiopia, Evgeniy Tarkihi, said that Yuri Gagarin, by traveling into space, continued Russia’s role as a space exploration superpower that continues to this day.

The ambassador added that they will continue to work diligently on the cooperation that has begun with the institute, and will continue to expand their efforts to send an Ethiopian astronaut into space using the Russian space center.

During the program, General Manager of the Space Science Society, Young Cherub, and Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture, Vladimir Globachev, gave speeches commemorating the legacy and contributions of Yuri Gagarin.

On the same day, leaders, students, and experts from the Russian Embassy, ​​the Russian Center for Science and Culture, and the Institute of Astronauts jointly commemorated the anniversary of Yuri’s historic space flight.
