On February 27, 2025, the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) at the Institute’s headquarters.
The MoU was signed by the Director General of SSGI, Abdisa Yilma, and the Director General of the Ethiopian Communications Authority, Ing. Balcha Reba. During the event, the Deputy Director General of SSGI, Ms. Bethlehem Nigusse, presented the key aspects of the MoU and highlighted the collaborative efforts between the two institutions, particularly in the fields of Earth observation and communication satellites. She encouraged both sides to engage in extensive discussions to further strengthen their cooperation.
Director General Abdisa Yilma stated that the Ethiopian Communications Authority would provide orbital slots for the ETRSS-2 satellite and that experts from both institutions would be assigned to expedite the work efficiently. He emphasized that this MoU marks a significant step toward future collaborations and will play a crucial role in advancing joint initiatives.
During the discussion, Director General Balcha Reba affirmed the Ethiopian Communications Authority’s commitment to working closely with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to obtain and secure the 58.3-degree orbital slots. He also noted that the Authority would actively participate in international conferences and exchange information to enhance expertise in the field.
