SSGI Launches SciGirls Program to Empower Women

The Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) has begun providing training to women to increase their participation in STEM fields.

On October 18, 2017, SSGI launched the SciGirls – Empowering Girls and Female Teachers in Science Through Astronomy project, aimed at high school female students. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance women’s involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and has introduced focused training for science teachers.

Dr. Yishrun Alemaye, Minister of Innovation and Technology, attended the launch event and emphasized the importance of supporting female students in STEM. He highlighted the significance of increasing their knowledge, motivation, and competitiveness in scientific fields, pledging ongoing support for women to help advance the sector.

Betelhem Nguse, Director of SSGI, noted that the institute is actively developing strategies and projects to empower women as competent participants and leaders in STEM. The training targets female students in grades 9-10 and female science teachers from across the country.

Participants represent all regions of the country, and the training will span six consecutive days.
