Stakeholder Discussion on Southwest Ethiopian Forest Carbon Trading

On July 3, 2025, the Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) organized a stakeholder discussion on carbon trading. The focus was on integrating the Southwest Ethiopian forest into the carbon market. The event brought together experts and government representatives. They explored steps to link forest conservation with carbon trading opportunities.

The goal is to protect forest ecosystems, address climate change, and create sustainable economic benefits. SSGI is taking a leading role in supporting environmental sustainability and local development.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited SSGI

Leaders and experts attended from the Southwest Ethiopian Forest, the Environment and Climate Change Bureau, and the Ministry of Planning. Other relevant institutions also joined to discuss key enabling issues.

During the session, Dr. Berhan Gessesse, Lead Executive of SSGI’s Remote Sensing Directorate, presented a list of actionable activities. These actions aim to support the integration of the Southwest Ethiopian forest into the carbon trading system.

Dr. Asrat Gebremariam, Head of the Environment and Climate Change Bureau, commended the Institute’s efforts. He noted SSGI’s role in turning forest and climate challenges into economic opportunities. The regional government expressed strong support for the success of the project.
